Chapter Seven

“I swear. They’ve come up almost overnight. Would you look at the size of those plants?” Randi said.

“They said they sprout a lot faster than we’re used to. I never noticed around the gardens back on Space Station One. Someone else always took care of them then,” Bryson said.

“Unfortunately, the weeds grow just as fast. It’s taking me almost half the day each day keeping them pulled.” Randi planted her hands on her hips.

“Well remember to wear gloves and dig out anything that might be poisonous. You’ve seen the pictures in the books of what to avoid. If it’s something you don’t want to deal with, just let us know, and we’ll take care of it,” Mason reminded her.

“So far it’s just weeds and those purple flowers. I can handle them.” Randi bent over and picked up the hoe. “Better get back to work. What are you guys doing this afternoon?”

“Walking the fence line to be sure nothing’s damaged it or tried to dig under it,” Mason told her.

“Be careful, guys. I want you back home in one piece.” Randi watched them go then returned to hoeing up the weeds.

Not long after the men left, Tinker bounded up next to her and watched as she worked. When it started digging next to her, she had to shoo the creature off before it dug up some of their vegetables. It just hopped over to the picnic table and curled up under it to sleep. Randi shook her head and continued working but minutes later, the devious little bunnycat was back, pushing at the hoe and nudging her backward. Randi sighed and stomped to the back door in hopes of leading the creature inside while she finished in the garden. It followed her, and she shut it inside before returning to the hoeing.

Something brushed her leg when she wasn’t looking. She figured it was Tinker until she saw that Tinker was inside. She looked around and nearly screamed when a dorrie rushed past her growling as it did. Randi did scream when it bit her leg through her jeans.

Randi knew that the dorrie’s bite was serious. She hopped back to the house, throwing open the door only to have Tinker rush outside to tie up with the dorrie. She slammed the door behind her then hobbled into the office to call the guys for help. It took her two tries to get the radio to work. She was shaking so hard she wasn’t sure she’d make sense when she reached them. If she reached them.

“Hey, Randi. What’s up?” Mason asked over the speaker.

“A dorrie bit me. Tinker attacked it, but I don’t know if he killed it or not. I’m bleeding. What do I do?” She tried to keep the tears out of her voice but was sure Mason could hear them.

“Fuck! Sit down and apply pressure to the wound until we can get there. We’re on our way, babe. Try to calm down. That only makes your heart beat faster, and you’ll bleed more.
